The Power of a Home Reset: Starting Fresh in the New Year

A wise man once said, “The best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time.” So this year, let’s take our time, enjoy the journey. Starting fresh doesn’t have to mean sprinting to the finish line—it’s about pacing yourself and making intentional changes. Here’s how we can start fresh in the New Year:

First, let’s refresh our space

Though it is common practice to clean everything in your house in one day, I want to challenge you to spread this out during the week. Part of being more intentional is learning how to use the time we have more efficiently. Cleaning a little bit everyday leaves you more time to invest in the things that keep you excited while still being responsible. Here’s a look at a daily routine you could follow for your week:

Before work: Start a load of clothes, empty your dishwasher, and make your bed

After work: Complete your “chore of the day,” dry and fold your morning load, and reload the dishwasher

Choose two days to do no work: Set aside these days for self care or fun activities with loved ones!

If you have extra hands at home, get them in on the plans. Break up what chores you do, have them finish what your start, or vice versa.

Now, let’s invest in a calendar

Investing in a calendar is not an old adage sis - it will change your life! Starting fresh for the New Year means realizing what didn’t work in the past, and making more practical solutions. Here’s a look at how your calendar will be your new best friend this year:

It will take hold of your finances: Those numbers on the calendar are now due dates - no excuses or surprises on that bank statement! Take time to write these dates out and learn the art of discipline and budgeting

It will encourage connection with loved ones: Write down important dates like birthdays, anniversaries, and milestones. Use these as reminders to send a thoughtful gift, arrange a meetup, or plan a weekend visit for that special person

It will help you meet deadlines: For this, I like to have a physical calendar so I can view it a month out. This lets me know how much time I have (or don’t have) to complete an assignment on time. Give yourself 1-2 weeks of a grace period for projects that take more time - you never know what will happen

There are so many other ways a calendar can be your best friend, but these should be a great start!

Lastly, prioritize self care

A home reset isn’t just about your physical space—it’s also about YOU. Schedule time for activities that rejuvenate you, whether that’s journaling, reading, or a nice bubble bath. When you care for yourself, you’re better equipped to care for your space and the people in it
