Let's talk about something that's near and dear to our hearts: protecting our hair. As women of color, we know the time and effort it takes to maintain our beautiful, textured hair or those carefully crafted protective styles. So, when it comes to inviting our bonnets into the bedroom, you better believe it's a non-negotiable.
Picture this: you've spent hours perfecting your hair, whether it's a twist-out, braids, a fresh wash-and-go, or the bundles have been straightened. The last thing you want is for all that hard work to go to waste because you wanted to cuddle up with your boo. Trust me, I get it. But let's get one thing straight—our hair comes first.
Sure, that new special someone might be cute, but I refuse to sacrifice my hair for anyone. I'm talking about taking off that makeup and tying up my hair before hitting the sheets. And let me tell you, I'm not just casually throwing on a scarf or bonnet—I'm securing the fort, protecting every strand like it's my crown jewels.
Why? Because I know how things can get when you're getting cozy with someone. Things heat up, hands start wandering, and the last thing I want is for my hair to become a casualty of the moment. Trust me, unprotected hair during sex? It's a disaster waiting to happen.
But here's the thing—I've never once had a guy judge me for tying up my hair. If anything, it sparks a conversation, a shared understanding of the importance of self-care, especially in Black culture. And let's be real, if someone has an issue with me prioritizing my hair, then they're definitely not the one for me.
In the world of Black love, taking care of ourselves, including our hair, is not just accepted—it's celebrated. So, if your partner isn't down with the bonnet life, then it's time to reevaluate. Because trust me, there's a king out there who will not only embrace your bonnet but will also be right there beside you, pulling out his durag.
So, ladies, let's stop worrying about being "too cute" and start prioritizing our own comfort and self-respect. Because there's nothing sexier than waking up the next day, hair intact, ready to take on the world. And remember, if he can't handle you at your bonnet, then he sure as hell doesn't deserve you at your best.
Stay true to yourself, stay fabulous, and keep slaying, Queens!
With love and bonnets,
Autumn B.
